  • How To Toe and Heel a uPVC Door

Although customers may expect the glass sealed units to be of a tight or snug fit within the door. This is not the case.

Double glazed doors usually have a total of 3 hinges to hang the door leaf onto the door frame.

    These hinges can be :

    a) Butt Hinges or

    b) Flag Hinges

Of which, the latter is found more popular as they offer a 3 ways adjustment : up & down, left to right, and inwards & outwards

The considerable weight of the double glazed sealed unit being of a toughened glass can cause the door leaf to drop and this will be noticed by either the scuffing of the door leaf on the botttom of the door frame as well as causing unallignment of the door locking mechanism, and therefore being difficult to open or lock correctly.

This is because the weight of the glass is actually pulling the door leaf downward and causing extra pressure on each hinge.

Therefore, to correct this, we have to counter balance the height of the glass and throw this weight upward and toward the hinge side. The correct way to do this is to pivot the glass unit from its lowest axis point on the hinged side of the doorand its highest axis point on the handle side of the door. Packers are inserted in various sizes on both the bottom and the jamb (side) on the hinged side only.

The glass unit then falls out of square dropping down on the handle side of the door. A packer of the same size as of that placed in the bottom is then positioned between the top of the glass unit and inner side of the top of the door frame. Once this is done, the last packers can be positioned at the top of the opposite jamb (side). This will then in turn force the glass back over as well lift the door frame to correct allignment and stop the door scuffing at the bottom.

Once, this is done, then a sealant is usually recommended to be placed on the packers to stop any future movement.

The glazing beads can then be refitted to hold the glass in. Should any minor alteration be required, this can be done by way of making adjustment to the door hinges with an allen key
